DHEA, short for dehydroepiandrosterone, is a steroid which is found in abundance in humans. DHEA seems to be involved in a variety of biological effects in mammals, produced by the adrenal glands, but also being synthesized in the brain, it manipulates the androgen receptor indirectly and directly, if indirectly then through metabolites. Considered a neurosteroid, it can be also viewed as a prohormone for the gonadal steroids. DHEA is produced by means of two cytochrome P450 enzymes from cholesterol. As a supplement it continues to be of widespread importance and popularity, particularly within the body building communities. Apparently the use of DHEA is helping individuals lose weight, burn fat and bulk up on muscle mass. Other purported effects include promoting of the immune system, healthy blood sugar levels and overall well being.
